How Much One North County Mom Had to Pay to get a New Place to Rent

CARLSBAD - A mother in North County is going to great lengths to keep a roof over her kids' heads.

Melina Georghiou is a single mother of three teenagers and she tells NBC 7 she had trouble securing a new place to live until she made the bold move of offering to pay for a year of rent in advance.

"And when I got the text back, she’s like, ‘You know, I’m really hesitant renting to you, but you offered a year in advance, so I’ll take it and the place is yours," Georghiou said.

That move cost the travel nurse more than $42,000 and required her sell nearly everything she owns and empty out her savings account. Georghiou says the decision came after she spent hundreds on rental applications for a new place only to be turned down by every one of them.

Despite the ordeal, she says she's thankful to no longer worry about her family being homeless.
