6 Dead, at Least 24 Injured in July 4th Parade Shooting in Chicago Suburb

As 4th of July events were beginning in San Diego County with runs, parades and people making plans to watch one of the fireworks displays this evening, news broke of a mass shooting at a parade in suburban Chicago.

A manhunt was continuing for the shooter who police say killed at least 6 people with at least 24 injured and taken to hospitals in the shooting in the affluent suburb of Highland Park late Monday morning.

Police say a gun was found in the area and police were searching for the gunman who opened fire, possibly from a rooftop, at about 10:14 a.m. CDT. The city of Highland Park confirmed it was still "an active shooter incident" and urged all "individuals are advised to shelter in place." The suspect was identified as a white male, 18-20 years old, with black hair.

"Law enforcement agencies are searching for the suspect; evidence of a firearm has been recovered," the city said. "Numerous law enforcement officers are responding and have secured a perimeter around downtown Highland Park."

“Unfortunately as you may know, we have an active shooter situation in Highland Park at their parade,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker told reporters at an Independence Day event in nearby Evanston. “... I’m still getting reports.”

Law enforcement officials have not indicated any specific plans for extra security at July 4th events in San Diego, but local police and sheriffs deputies are always assigned to various events.
