State Department Issues New Travel Advisory

SAN DIEGO - A new warning from the U.S. State Department is asking people to reconsider their travel plans South of the border.

The Travel Advisory says visiting Tijuana and Rosarito is a high risk for U.S. citizens because of rampant crime and kidnapping. But Chris Pichardo, owner of Baja Rides & Tours in Tijuana, tells reporting partner 10 News, despite the U.S. government warning, Mexican authorities are doing a good job of keeping the region safe, especially areas frequented by tourists.

"It gets categorized and creates this chaos and panic, to go south of the border," said Pichardo. "Locals, we go out in the city as normal without any confrontations."

U.S. officials say there could be conflict between criminal organizations and Mexican security forces, and if you do need to travel to Tijuana, keep a low profile, be aware of your surroundings, and in an emergency call 911.
