SAN DIEGO - A group of volunteers is back home in San Diego after helping people in Northern California rebuild after a devastating wildfire.
The volunteers were in the town of Paradise, which was destroyed by the Camp Fire in 2018. One of the volunteers was John Zawis and he tells reporting partner 10 News when he first visited over a year ago the community still looked like a ghost town.
"It was kind of eerie because there's a town, but all the houses are gone. The lots have been stripped," Zawis said.
But now more construction is going on, with more homes being rebuilt.
"Lots of building going on, and people are starting to move back in, so it's been a really exciting time to get back up there," Zawis said.
The men are part of a volunteer group with International Relief Teams, which is an organization that helps families recover after a disaster. The organization has helped to rebuild 16 homes in the area so far.
