Scammers Targeting Your Pain at the Pump

SAN DIEGO - While gas prices are falling, it's still a big expense for most people and scammers are looking to take advantage of you.

Fake gas cards are being pushed over text messages, email and Social Media across the country. Viridiana Quintana with the Better Business Bureau tells NBC 7 if a company is giving away a free item, it should always be completely free.

"The thing that makes it stand out and should be a red flag is when they ask for a payment because there's a small fee," said Quintana.

In one instance, the BBB says one consumer paid the $2 fee and was later charged $180. Issues of identity theft are also a concern.

The BBB says take the time to look into the company or brand associated with the gas card giveaway to make sure it's being advertised on it's website and Social Media. Another piece of advice, don't act on impulse: if it's too good to be true... it probably is.
