Big Strike Happening Downtown as Comic-Con Kicks Off

SAN DIEGO - Workers at a big hotel Downtown will go on strike today, hours before Comic-Con's preview night.

Unite Here Local 30, the labor union representing more than 400 Hilton Bayfront Hotel employees, says negotiations have stalled. The impasse came down to two issues: a pay increase and a demand for daily room cleaning, which is part of an effort to prevent workers' hours from being cut.

The union wants a $4.00 an hour wage increase over the next two years, but the but hotel says it will offer a $2.50 raise over 18 months but would not return to daily room cleaning. The union says the practice, which has become common place since the start of the pandemic, has led to a 30 percent cut in workers' hours. The workers have been without a contract since November.

The hotel says it has a good relationship with the union and will work to get a new contract that works best for both parties.

The Hilton Bayfront's Indigo Ballroom is booked for several panels for Comic-Con, but it's too soon to tell if the strike could affect the event.
