What's Next for the Ocean Beach Pier?

SAN DIEGO - As the Ocean Beach Pier reaches the end of its service life, residents and visitors are asking what's next for the iconic spot on the San Diego shoreline.

The pier will likely be dismantled over the next year or so if a committee decides that's the best course of action, along with replacing it. According to the city, a planning committee will start meeting in the Spring of next year to determine the next steps. But it seems the plan gaining traction is to build a new pier, a project estimated to cost about $65 Million.

Daniel Macias tells NBC 7 says he's been fishing on the pier for more than 20 years and he understands the pier has seen better days.

"As much as I'd hate to see it shut down for that long, it's necessary." said Macias.

Reactions are mixed, with some people suggesting replacing the pair a section at a time, rather than tear it down all at once.
