SAN DIEGO - A non-profit here in San Diego County is working to make sure those who served our country will have a roof over their head.
Wounded Warrior Homes helps veterans with serious injuries make sure of their most basic needs - a place to live - is taken care of. Executive Director Mia Roseberry tells reporting partner 10 News they've built smaller, granny flats for some of these veterans.
“So the idea with the ADU is that they’ll be able to live in here for the next 30, 60, 90 days when they’re getting ready to transition out and feel what it’s like to really have their own place,” said Roseberry.
Air Force veteran David Teall is currently living in an ADU at one of the properties. He suffered a traumatic brain injury while serving in Afghanistan.
“I experienced a vehicle bomb at the base that I was at, and it really impacted my life significantly with nightmares and dealing with anxiety and just dealing with loud noises," said Teal.
Teall says having a stable place to live has helped him with transitioning back into civilian society.
The organization currently has three properties serving Post 9/11 veterans. Wounded Warrior Homes is funded by grants and donations.
