SAN DIEGO - Bike advocates say the adoption of statewide standards for e-bikes is the first step for overall bike safety.
Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that will provide funding to the California Highway Patrol to develop these statewide standards for e-bikes and those who ride them. William Rhatigan of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition tells NBC 7 it starts with teaching people how to properly ride an e-Bike.
"That program will be available online for any school, employer, or anyone else to access if they want to provide e-bike education,” said Rhatigan.
But Rhatigan says it doesn't stop there, more traffic control, including enhanced bike lanes, is needed.
According to the Bicycle Coalition, at least four bike riders have died on San Diego County roadways in recent weeks after being hit by cars. The Highway Patrol has until September of next year to roll out the new e-bike standards and safety program.
