SAN DIEGO - A number of restaurants in San Diego are still having a tough time with hiring staff.
“My chef has had to work double time,” Tony Loiacono, owner of Parkhouse Eatery in University Heights, told NBC 7. “A lot of my front of the house staff has had to work in the kitchen too, which pulls them away from the front of the house, and then my front of the house has had to cover those shifts.”
Loiacono say's he's not alone, at least two of his colleagues are also facing a staffing shortage at their respective restaurants. So in response, Loiacono is closing the Parkhouse Eatery on Tuesdays to give his staff a break.
One reason why it may be tough to find staff is the county's low unemployment rate, which is just over 3 percent. The National Restaurant Association says food service industry staff is still down about six percent compared to pre-pandemic levels.
