Temecula Considers 'Sanctuary City' resolution for the Unborn

TEMECULA - After Gov. Newsom signed a series of new abortion laws, one Southern California city leader tried to take a symbolic stance against it.

NBC 7 reports Temecula City Councilmember Jessica Alexander proposed what she called a resolution that would have created a "sanctuary city" for the unborn.

"We are taking a stand for life and holding it up sacred," Alexander said. "This upholds the foundation for what Temecula has stood for and has been built on."

Supporters of the resolution gathered for a prayer circle ahead of Tuesday night's council meeting. Residents on both sides of the issue spoke for about an hour, including some who said abortion was a part of a viscous cycle. But others said the resolution crossed the line.

"There is a rule in America that says there is separation of church and state, so keep your church and religion out of city politics" one resident said to Alexander.

In the end, the council voted four to one against the resolution, but the Mayor said even though he's against it, the resolution could be considered again.

While the resolution was non-binding and would have no legal impact, political science experts say local city or county governments would not be able to pass any laws that would restrict abortion access.
