Could Poway Unified start Banning some Books?

SAN DIEGO - The Poway Unified School District is looking into whether to ban two books that deal with LGBTQ issues

The two books are "Fun Home" which details the author's relationship with her closeted homosexual father and "Gender Queer" which details the author's journey with gender identity and may include some inappropriate illustrations. Some Poway Unified parents called for the immediate removal of the books.

"I do not believe that families in our district support normalizing the sexualization of children," one parent said at a recent school board meeting.

But some Poway residents and retired teachers told NBC 7 the books should be left in the libraries and let the parent's decide what their own kids can and cannot read.

Poway Unified says it has never banned any books from school libraries, and in recent years has expanded its selection of LGTBQ-plus titles, but says the two titles in question are now undergoing a review.
