SAN DIEGO - More guaranteed income programs are popping up in San Diego County.
The county will soon provide $500 a month to hundreds of low-income families deemed at risk for neglect or abuse. That's according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, which also reports a new program from both Jewish Family Service and Café X which will give $1,000 a month to 25 low-income African-American women. This is in addition to a program already happening in San Diego's South Bay where 150 families receive $500 a month.
The money is given with no strings attached so families can use the money for food to help pay rent or to pay for child care. Critics say guaranteed income makes people lazy and work less but data from other cities who've tried out similar programs shows that more participants were working full time jobs within a year of first receiving the payments.
