State Scientists Update Tsunami Hazard Maps

SACRAMENTO - Scientists issue an update to the state's tsunami hazard map.

The California Geological Survey recently released revised tsunami maps for San Diego, Santa Cruz, Ventura, Marin, Sonoma, Solano and Napa Counties. The new maps take advantage of new data and modeling to help residents better understand how an earthquake near or far could affect coastal communities and to better plan for possible evacuation in the event of a tsunami warning.

The new maps include estimated wave heights, some of which have doubled since the 2009 model.

The Geological Survey says the state's coastal communities have been struck by more than 150 tsunamis since 1800, most of which have been minor but some have caused lots of damage. The tsunami triggered by the 2011 Japan Earthquake caused about $100 Million in damage to ports and harbors up and down the state. Surges from the volcanic eruption in Tonga earlier this year caused about $10 Million in damage to harbors in Santa Cruz and Ventura counties.
