The Meaning Behind the Season of Advent

SAN DIEGO -- While there's plenty of Christmas feeling in the air, some Christians in San Diego, across the nation and around the world are taking time to pause and reflect before the holy day.

"In Advent we have a season where we prepare for and antirape the coming of Jess into the world on Christmas day," said Very Rev. Penny Bridges, Senior Pastor of Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego.

A long time tradition of the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and mainline Christian churches, the solemn season is typically celebrated in the four or six weeks leading up to Christmas and is similar to the season of Lent.

"We think more about the fact that Jesus is coming to be our king, our sovereign, the ruler of all of creation," Rev. Bridges said.

Worship during Advent typically centers around the themes of hope, joy, love and peace with the lighting candles and the re-telling of the biblical prophecy and birth narrative of the messiah.
