SACRAMENTO - The new year is just around the corner and several new laws will take effect across the state.
You won't get a ticket for walking across the street outside of a crosswalk anymore, because starting January 1st, police won't be able to cite you for jaywalking. A decades old loitering law aimed at curbing prostitution will be repealed and a number of people with certain criminal convictions will be able to have their records electronically sealed.
And the state will officially recognize Lunar New Year as a holiday, an occasion observed by most Asian cultures.
Several more laws take effect later in the year, highlighted in a short report by the San Francisco Chronicle.
