Mr. Newsom Goes to the Border

CALEXICO - Gov. Gavin Newsom made a brief visit to the border Monday to discuss immigration issues with Mexican officials and migrant families.

In a post on Twitter, the Governor said he visited the city of Mexicali, the capitol of Baja California.

"I had the opportunity to meet with the governor and meet with some international humanitarian leaders as well as many migrants from Haiti, from Guatemala and from parts of Mexico," Newsom said.

The Governor toured a migrant shelter in Mexicali as well as a vaccination center.

His visit comes just a week before Title 42 is expected to be lifted, which could potentially lead to a mass influx of migrants and asylum-seekers at the border. The federal policy has been in use for the past two years to quickly expel migrants from the U.S. over COVID-19 concerns.

We're already seeing a surge in Texas, where some 50,000 migrants from Central and South America came to the border there in the month of October alone. The Biden Administration has asked congress for $3 Billion in additional funding to help manage the next wave of migrants expect to show up at the Southwest border. There are concerns that the soon-to-be Republican controlled House of Representatives will vote against the funding request.
