SAN DIEGO - Residents of Barrio Logan are speaking out against a proposed cement plant in their community.
The proposed plant from the Mitsubishi Cement Corporation is back under consideration after Port of San Diego Commissioners put the plan on hold two years ago over potential health hazards. During a protest Tuesday, residents said they're concerned about how the plant could affect the community's already poor air quality the protesters calling the placement of the plant 'environmental racism.'
"Two years later we’re fighting for the same thing, it’s frustrating it’s definitely upsetting,” Barrio Logan resident Martiza Garcia told reporting partner 10 News. “Right over the bridge, Coronado has a very similar environment close to the bay and they don’t get any pollution.”
Mitsubishi says their proposal is for a clean plant with reduced emissions. Environmental activists say they plan to speak out against the placement of the plant at the next Port of San Diego Commissioners meeting.
