County Hospitals Preparing for Winter Surge

SAN DIEGO - As cases of COVID-19, flu and RSV spike across the county, are hospitals are preparing for an influx of patients.

UC San Diego Health is breaking out the tents again, setting up mobile triage units in parking areas and converting a former conference room into a patient room.

"That is something that we are working on and it's almost ready at our La Jolla campus to create some additional space for patients," Dr. Brian Clay told NBC 7. "It's had a substantial overhaul."

Overflow tents are already in use at other area hospitals, including Sharp Grossmont.

While the COVID-19 case numbers are trending upward, health officials are hoping this winter will not be as bad as the last two, and are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated and wear a mask in crowded spaces.
