Neighbors on the lookout for Crafty Porch Pirate

ENCINITAS - A porch pirate in the North County is making some bold moves and residents are hoping he'll soon get caught.

Over the past week, homes in Encinitas have been hit by a crafty porch pirate dressed as a FedEx delivery driver, grabbing packages minutes after they are delivered.

"The package came at 12:41 and according to our camera, he came at 12:45," resident Wendy Van Vechten told NBC 7.

A number of doorbell cameras have caught the package thief, carrying a small package then grabbing whatever packages are on the porch and taking off in an unmarked passenger van.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has confirmed it is investigating the rash of package thefts in the area. FedEx says while some unbranded rental trucks or vans are used during holiday deliveries, FedEx employees will always be wearing a photo ID badge, something the suspect seen in the doorbell camera videos is not wearing.

You can see the doorbell camera video and the full report from NBC 7.
