SAN YSIDRO - A pedestrian border crossing will reopen next week after being closed for nearly three years.
The PedWest crossing at the San Ysidro Port of Entry will reopen Monday, January 9, operating on a temporary daily schedule from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The crossing had been closed since the height of the pandemic in 2020 when non-essential travel was restricted. Prior to the pandemic, the crossing had been open 24 hours a day. Border officials will be assessing staffing needs, which means the hours of operation could be expanded in the coming months.
The PedWest crossing was an important part of the redesign of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The addition of the crossing helped to support bustling business districts on both sides of the border, largely mom and pop shops. Those who frequently cross from Tijuana into San Diego County hope the reopening of crossing will reduce border wait times.
The San Ysidro Port of Entry is one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, with more than 70,000 vehicles and 20,000 pedestrians crossing each day.
