County Supervisors to Focus on Homeless Veteran Problems

SAN DIEGO - County Supervisors are hoping to tackle the homeless crisis group by group, starting with veterans.

Counter Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, a Marine Corps veteran, along with County Supervisor Chair Nora Vargas, are pushing for a new initiative that will make helping homeless veterans a top priority.

“We want to get to a place where there are no homeless veterans in San Diego and if somebody does become homeless, they are immediately identified and the resources are there to get them off the street,” Fletcher told NBC 7.

Fletcher says some vets may not be ready for housing if they've been on the streets too long and need some rehabilitation. But for those who can go into housing right away, it's about working with property owners to make that happen.

“I think we’re gonna have some work on our end to make sure that we can make it work for those landlords," said Fletcher. "And then we’re going to need landlords who want to step up, say, 'Look, I get it. I care about this issue and I want to be part of the solution."

County supervisors expected to vote on the plan Tuesday.
