SAN DIEGO - An Eastern Orthodox church in San Diego is sending prayers and financial help to those affected by the devastating earthquake in the Middle East.
“When the earthquake hit, the big one, the major one, people were sleeping in their homes safely and it was freezing outside with rain and sleet and snow,” Father Anthony Baho at St. George's Antiochian Orthodox Church told reporting partner 10 News.
Father Baho is no stranger to the region, he was born in Damascus. His friends and family are okay but others are struggling especially after years of civil unrest in Syria. But signs of hope are visible.
“Based on what I’ve heard from our families when civil authorities are trying to dig through the rubble, civilians will come and help, nobody’s turned away,” Father Baho said.
Orthodox churches in Turkey and Syria have opened their doors to shelter people and are getting aide to those who need it.
