South Bay Schools suffer Internet Outage

CHULA VISTA - It's a first world problem affecting students and school staff in the South Bay.

Sweetwater Union High School District campuses suffered an internet outage Tuesday. Some 46,000 students showed up to class yesterday without internet and administrators didn't really have an answer as to what happened.

“The district told us over the speaker as an announcement that they were having problems with the internet and when I went to the library, they also told me something exploded, I’m not sure,” Castle Park Middle School student Arles Borjas told NBC 7.

With laptops, tablets and other tech tools rendered useless, Borjas said his assignments yesterday were all done on paper. The outage lasted the whole school day.

It's too soon to tell if the issue is hardware of software related and too soon to tell if the district was hit by hackers. It's unclear when internet service will be restored.

In the meantime, if parents need to get in touch with teachers and staff in the Sweetwater district, they will need to do it by phone or visiting the campus since email access has also been affected.
