Attorney Weighs in on Newsom's Call to Cut Ties with Walgreens

SAN DIEGO - Governor Gavin Newsom's calls to cut ties with Walgreens could spell trouble for the pharmacy chain.

Attorney Dan Eaton told NBC 7 the Governor's remarks could mean an end to MediCal and other insurance partnerships with Walgreens, which could ultimately affect more patients, not just those seeking abortion pills.

“The governor is talking about eliminating all contractual relationship with Walgreens," Eaton said. "That affects people who rely on Walgreens for medication for any reason at all."

Eaton says the state is a big buyer of pharmaceuticals and Walgreens' sales could be impacted. The chain could also lose out on reimbursements from the state for participating in certain prescription drug plans.

Newsom's remarks came after the chain decided not to sell abortion pills in 20 states after facing legal pressure due to strict abortion laws.
