Highway 78 Closure Extended

OCEANSIDE - Parts of Highway 78 in the North County will remain closed for a few more days.

Westbound 78 from College Boulevard to El Camino Real in Oceanside has been closed since last Wednesday after a 230 foot section of a culvert broke and created a sinkhole. CalTrans has been working on the highway trying to fill in that area and get it back open. But crews found two other broken culverts which will also be repair.

Rain in the forecast this week will also delay the groundwork. Once the repairs are made the Westbound lanes will reopen and then there will be some closures of the Eastbound lanes for additional repairs.

Sinkholes and landslides are not only a problem for the North County.

Residents in one El Cajon neighborhood had a little trouble getting in and out of their homes over the weekend after a sinkhole opened up on a surface street. Police closed part of Mundy Lane on Saturday night.

Crews from the city's public works department along with Helix Water District were assessing the damage and looking into ways to repair the roadway. Officials hope to reopen the street sometime Monday.
