San Diego's Largest Homeless Shelter will be Closing its Doors

SAN DIEGO - The shelter at Golden Hall will be wrapping up operations over the next few months and the City of San Diego will have to help relocate hundred of homeless people who've been staying there.

"To me it was more of like good news," Treondous Jackson, one of the 500 people staying at the shelter, told reporting partner 10 News. "I think it’s time we all get back on our feet again."

Jackson is headed to San Diego’s Job Corps Center where we'll get a hand up to get back into the workforce.

The shelter has been operated by Father Joe's Villages on a temporary permit for the past four years, but the facility wasn't built for such an operation.

“It was never meant to be that, to serve as a shelter," said Deacon Jim Vargas, the President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages. "The infrastructure inside plumbing and otherwise is not made to sustain

Families will be transitioned out of the center into a motel in Barrio Logan. So far, there's no plan in place for helping the single men and youth staying at the shelter.
