IMPERIAL BEACH - Renters rallied outside of apartments in the South Bay Wednesday calling for an end to no-fault evictions.
"Because rents are too damn high I wont be able to afford what I am able to afford here," Imperial Beach resident Patricia Mendoza told NBC 7.
Mendoza is being evicted from her apartment where she pays just over $1,600 a month because the landlord wants to remodel the unit. She hasn't been able to find another apartment within her price range and is worried she'll end up on the street with her two children.
Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre was at the demonstration and said more needs to be done at the state level to protect renters. She also said the city is considering a renter protection ordinance similar to one recently passed in Chula Vista.
About 70 percent of Imperial Beach residents are renters.
