No matter what you think about the attack on Iran, was it right, was it wrong, was it the right time or the wrong time, many thousands of people in San Diego are most likely at least a bit on edge.
And that’s because tens of thousands of Marines and sailors are based here. Many of their families live here. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, which is in the middle of the military operation against Iran, is based here.
The message from the U.S. Defense Department sent to Navy and Marine bases to “remain alert to the potential for attacks targeting U.S. facilities and personnel” tells you how serious the situation is.
The message from the Pentagon goes on to say this:
“Service members and civilians, as well as their family members, are encouraged to refrain from posting operations security-sensitive information concerning their travel plans on social media sites and review individual social media security settings for online profiles to ensure they are not overly revealing.”
A message like that is not a surprise to anyone in San Diego who is in the military and probably not to their families.
They know that serving in the nation’s military carries with it the knowledge that things like this will happen.
And for the rest of us, it means thinking about the men and women who service members and right now, praying for them all.
