Medical Marijuana? Don't Ask Your Veterinarian.

It is safe to assume, I believe, that you love your animals. From ferrets to guinea pigs to cats and dogs, most of us believe our pets are members of our family. We love them and care for them and nurse their ills and kiss their little snoots.

I am right there with you, going into crazy-animal-lady territory, and loving up on the local wildlife too, (you can see my embarrassing dove rescue on my Facebook page.) 

Phred the Cat is sick. Very sick. She has a very large tumor that is likely attached to her pancreas, AND is necrotic, and it IS going to kill her. 

Right now, I am giving her prednisone to keep the inflammation at bay. 

And I went and got a medical marijuana license, so I could buy her CBD oil (there is no THC in it, so no, I am not drugging my cat.) 

I have been buying Phred her CBD oil at the Point Loma Patient Cooperative... or whatever it's called. 

I went back to the vet the other day, to get Phred more prednisone, and asked the vet about CBD oil, and whether she thought it was as helpful as I think it is. She looked startled, and told me, "I can't talk about it. I'll lose my license." 

My vet would LOSE HER LICENSE for even TALKING to me about CBD for my cat!

There was an awkward pause, and I said, "OK, I guess I'll be taking that prednisone, then..." she nodded and looked at me with pity. 

I paid the nice lady at the front, took my pills and went home to dose Phred. With both.

I have been visiting Dr. Google for information on medical marijuana for my cat, and I believe it is helping her appetite, and keeping her feeling perky and full of little biscuits to make on her mommy (click here for a primer.)  

I will give my cat whatever it takes to improve her quality of life, right up until I believe she is in pain or otherwise too sick. Then I will take her on her last trip to the vet, whom I absolutely adore, and I will peacefully end her life. Let me repeat that.

 You can kill your own pet, but You can't get professional advice from Your vet on improving their quality of life with CBD oil. 

I was furious. Not at my vet, who is the most wonderful vet I have ever had. I was furious that she could not say one word to me about CBD. Or pot or whatever. My own doctor could talk to me about it, but not my vet. 

I may riot. 

I am certainly going to make some phone calls. 

My cat has cancer, and I will give her whatever I can find to keep her with me, and without pain. 

I bet you feel the same. So why can't your vet even tell you if it has been shown to be an effective treatment?
