Looking For A Home: Flamingo Spotted In The San Diego Bay

A flamingo has settled down in the San Diego Bay and no one seems to know where it came from. It was spotted last week walking along the southernmost part of San Diego Bay, close to the Silver Strand.

“I think it’s a Chilean flamingo,” said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge manager Brian Collins.  He says it's the first flamingo he's ever seen during more than two decades in San Diego.  It's puzzling to Collins, who says the bird's wings look intact, so it could fly...if it wanted to.

He says it's concerning because the flamingo is clearly out of place, but that it's not a terrible place for the bird, with salt ponds and a habitat that provides food. Collins said there was a band around the bird’s leg, which means it does belong to someone.

He's contacted the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld’s Aquatica, SeaWorld, and even the Marriott hotel downtown. All of them maintain flamingo exhibits, but no one reported missing a flamingo.
