San Diego Police Head into Busy July 4th Weekend with a Staffing Shortage

SAN DIEGO - San Diego's top cop says despite staffing shortages, his department plans to keep the Gaslamp Quarter safe over the July 4th holiday weekend.

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit tells NBC 7 it's an "all hands on deck" situation.

“You are going to see a presence of officers in cars for the Gaslamp, you are always going to see a presence on bike,” Chief Nisleit said.

But the San Diego Police Department is currently facing a staffing shortage of about 160 officers. Chief Nisleit hopes to get those positions filled soon.

Downtown San Diego business owners and residents are concerned about safety in the area after a recent shooting left two visitors wounded by stray bullets.
