The news this week from the DMV that Californians 70 years of age or older, with good driving records, will no longer be required to take the driving knowledge test is seen as welcome news for some, the older folks of course, and not so good news for some others who question the move.
But not because some older drivers may need a refresher, but because there are some drivers of all ages in California that can use a refresher on driving rules every few years.
All of you have to do is watch how some drivers drive. From the side roads to the freeways, you probably see drivers every day who break the rules. Speeding drivers, drivers who don’t fully stop at a stop sign or don’t know how to yield at 2-stop and 4-stop intersections. Drivers of all ages who violate driving rules.
The DMV says they’re changing the driving knowledge test policy for those 70 and older to reduce the long lines and long waits at DMV offices. No one will mind that, no matter what their age.
But it sure we be good to find an effective way to make sure that all drivers follow the rules so that driving is safer for everyone.
The number one thing new drivers are told is that driving is a privilege, not a right.
And with it comes the personal responsibility to drive well no matter how old you are.
