Not to overuse the word, but there are a lot of iconic things in San Diego. And one of them is happening today. The Holiday Bowl, that started way back in 1978 and remains one of the most well-liked and most exciting college football bowl game in the country.
And there are a lot of more bowl games than there were nearly 50 years ago. So that’s saying something.
And the Holiday Bowl is a lot more than just a football game. As the former executive director, Bruce Binkowski, says, the Holiday Bowl is a great community-wide event.
There is the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl parade, billed as one with the most parade balloons. And when people who watch the parade see the sunshine and the iconic sights of San Diego Bay, the Pacific Ocean and the mountains in the distance, a lot of those parade watchers wish they could live here.
And then there is the iconic KGB Sky Show, which once was what you might say was a San Diego chicken sized fireworks display at the beginning to now being the biggest and best fireworks show all year every year.
Yes, the day of the Holiday Bowl has become a big day for San Diego. and it is still something that we all appreciate and is something iconic, as Ken Kramer would say, about San Diego.
