Just the News We Wanted to Hear About the Border 2 Fire

You might say we dodged a bullet.

The rain that started falling this weekend came just at the right time.

The Border 2 Fire that started way out in the Otay Mountain wilderness late last week, suddenly exploded late Thursday night and quickly grew to several thousand acres and residents of the eastern edges of Chula Vista were under evacuation orders, warnings or advisories.

A lot of “Go Bags” were being packed up as the winds continued to blow across the very dry vegetation that the flames were consuming with ease.

Then things changed as the National Weather Service brought the breaking news…rain was on its way with Cal Fire officials lifting the evacuation orders and warnings and saying they were cautiously optimistic.

Had the weather not changed and the windy and dry conditions had remained, the Border 2 Fire could have turned into a bigger one and a really bad one.

So now with the rain and more and more containment of the fire happening, thousands of South County area residents are breathing signs of relief.

But it has been another good reminder for all of us that no matter what time of year it may be, we are always at risk of wildfires and the weather that helps make them spark easier.

And it’s also a good time to be thankful for all of our firefighters who are the ones who put their lives on the line for all of us.
