Padres Fan Fest and Other Fun Things To Do This Weekend In San Diego

What things can you do to end the first month of 2025? Well, a lot!

You can start the weekend off with the PADRES FAN FEST at 10 a.m. It’s free and fun for the whole family. There are lots of players signing autographs, kids are invited to run the bases or play catch on the field. There will be Q&A sessions with coaches and players, and baseball items for sale. Previous years have had huge crowds, so get your parking situation taken care of in advance.

The SAN DIEGO BLACK FILM FESTIVALis going on all weekend at the AMC Theater in UTC. It was established here more than 20 years ago, becoming one of the largest Black film festivals in the U.S. You can watch shorts, documentaries, animation, comedy, drama, and more.

The SAN DIEGO GULLS have a game against the Toronto Marlies, and for those who collect sports memorabilia – fans will be getting a bobblehead; not of a hockey player, though…one of the late San Diego sports legend, BILL WALTON.

If you’re a fan of the music Walton liked, the Grateful Dead tribute band DARK STAR ORCHESTRA will be at The Sound in DEL MAR. Tie-dye not required.

If you want laughs, in CLAIREMONT at Mic Drop Comedy, it’s JAMIE LISSOW. You see him each week on Gutfeld! He was also the writer/producer/star of Netflix’s “Real Rob.” He’ll be there Saturday night, too.

If you miss the way Sam Kinison would scream at you when he did comedy, LEWIS BLACK (The Daily Show) will be at the Balboa Theatre doing his “Goodbye Yeller Brick Road” tour DOWNTOWN.

A show that won many Grammy’s and Tony’s, but doesn’t have anything to do with the classic movie of the same name – SOME LIKE IT HOT – will be at the San Diego Civic Theatre DOWNTOWN. It’ll be performed all weekend.

Another SATURDAY NIGHT, I guess that makes it all right…to go out and see another show, so you can start your February in style.

Former Rugburns member and local music legend GREGORY PAGE will be performing the songs of Leon Redbone in OCEANSIDE at the SUNSHINE BROOKS THEATRE.

And if you think tribute acts are always old rock ‘n roll bands like the Beatles and Stones, well…there’s a grunge tribute show at THE HOLDING COMPANY in OCEAN BEACH, with Nirvana Mania and No Hard Feelings.

A new movie coming out, that you don’t have to spend money to see…if you have AMAZON PRIME. YOU’RE CORDIALLY INVITED is the latest film where Will Ferrell acts like a man child. And I always laugh when he’s that character, even in a script like this, that’s often uneven, and has way too many quirky characters. Reese Witherspoon plays it straight. She’s the woman Ferrell wants to exact his revenge on. You see, he rented a small island resort for his daughter’s wedding, and it was the same day she had it booked for her little sister’s nuptials. And hijinks ensue! Some scenes are hysterically funny. Other times they’re truly bizarre – like when he wrestles an alligator. Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) plays the same weird character he often plays, and he’s the one trying to keep the two families from fighting and sharing the resort. My wife and I laughed enough that we enjoyed watching it, and you probably will too (even if it doesn’t even come close to being one of Ferrell’s best). 2 ½ stars out of 5.
