The Best Things To Do In San Diego This Weekend

The Oscars are just around the corner, and we have another film festival if you want to get revved up for the big show. It’s the 14th annual OCEANSIDE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL running through the 22nd at the Sunshine Brooks Theater.

One of the funniest comedians of the last 20 years, who also pops up in movies is – DAVE ATTELL. He’ll be at The American Comedy Company DOWNTOWN. For fans of his show “Insomniac” – don’t worry, this is a normal showtime. He’s there Saturday night, too.

With the success of “Hamilton” we now have – 3 SUMMERS OF LINCOLN at the LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE. It’s a new musical that blends R&B and gospel, in a story that has Frederick Douglass meeting President Lincoln in the summer of 1862. The show plays all weekend long.

We have an eclectic mix of music genres for you to enjoy in SAN DIEGO this weekend:

For classical music lovers, the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, with international superstar pianist YUNCHAN LIM make their San Diego debut, rockin’ out to Rachmaninoff and Mahler. That’s at the newly renovated Jacobs Music Center DOWNTOWN.

There always seems to be a tribute band in town, and tonight it’s VIVA SANTANA at Humphrey’s Backstage Music Club on SHELTER ISLAND.

And from evil ways to…EVIL WOMAN: The American ELO, will be at PALA CASINO.

And you can get up, stand up, and drive up over to the Worldbeat Cultural Center DOWNTOWN, where there will be a TRIBUTE TO THE REGGAE LEGENDS. This is the 44th year for the show which will run all weekend with a variety of musicians covering a lot of Reggae artists.

SATURDAY…if you’re still feeling bad about your weight and all the sweets you ate on Valentine’s day…the 3rd Annual SoCal Sumo Open is happening at LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL.

The 16th annual Brazilian JAZZ FESTIVAL at Dizzy’s on Morena Boulevard. A lot of talented musicians playing songs by Sinatra, Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Herb Alpert and more. Bring your own whipped cream.

THE RUSH TRIBUTE PROJECT will perform at the Magnolia Performing Arts Center in El Cajon. That’s one tribute band where the drummer has the hardest part. And…

DEAD MAN’S PARTY is at the Belly Up Tavern in SOLANA BEACH, doing the Oingo Boingo thang.

A little farther south in DOWNTOWN, you can see R.E.S.P.E.C.T. a tribute to Aretha Franklin. You’ll hear all the Queen of Soul’s greatest hits at the Balboa Theatre.

And we lost another artist recently – Garth Hudson of The Band. There are no members of The Band left, but you can see the San Diego band CHEST FEVER do their tribute at the Booze Brothers Brewing Company in VISTA.

Luckily, we still have the talented Chrissie Hynde, but it will be a lot cheaper to see PRETENDING CHRISSIE with their Pretenders tribute show at TERI Campus of Life in “the middle” of Deer Springs Road in SAN MARCOS.

SUNDAY…in the afternoon after you’ve enjoyed a nice brunch, here’s another type of music for you to enjoy – bluegrass. The San Diego Bluegrass Society will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Duckfoot Brewing Company off Miramar Road in MIRA MESA.

You’ll hear roots, Americana, and gospel music, with the BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA, and some blues and soul, with SHEMEKIA COPELAND at the POWAY CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS.

For those who want to stay in and watch things on TV, NBC is airing a spin-off of “Suits” (the show now famous for giving the world Meghan Markle). It’s called “Suits: LA” and it starts Sunday.

And the third season of YELLOWJACKETS recently started streaming.
