President George H.W. Bush Takes Train To His Final Resting Place

People wave at the train carrying the casket of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University

President George H.W. Bush was taken to his final resting place on board of a custom-painted Union Pacific Locomotive 4141 train car. The train slowed down during its 70-mile journey from Spring, Texas to College station, to allow onlookers to pay their final respects to the 41st president.

Bush will be interred near his wife, Barbra, and their three-year-old daughter who died from Leukemia in 1953 on the grounds of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, on the Texas A&M University campus.

Before his casket was placed on the train, Bush was remembered by family and friends during a funeral at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston.

James Baker, who was Bush's secretary of state and chief of staff, delivered the first eulogy during the service and said that Bush "was a leader and he knew it."

"He understood that humility toward, and not humiliation of, a fallen adversary was the very best path to peace."

The former president's oldest grandson George Prescott Bush shared stories from his childhood, fondly remembering the time he spent with "Gampy" and "Ganny" when he could get the chance.

"In a typical day, he'd wake up around 5 a.m. to review security briefings and grab his first coffee of the day. When the coast was clear all the grandkids would try our best to snag a spot on the bed and nestle up between him and 'Ganny' while they read the paper."

Bush was honored during a state funeral on Wednesday, which President Donald Trump declared to be a National Day of Mourning.
