Alaska was hit by an 8.2 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, July 28. It was reportedly the state's strongest earthquake since 1964.

On Thursday morning (July 29), forecasters watched for threats of a tsunami along the Southern California coastline, including Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego County.

By 3:00 A.M. the National Weather Service announced on their Twitter that there was no current threat.

"We're in the clear! No tsunami threat for So Cal."

However, the NWS in San Diego and Los Angeles both warned residents that the earthquake felt through the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak is expected to prompt unusual currents.

"Remember, even though there is no threat of a tsunami affecting California, there will be strong and unusual currents today, especially in local harbors. Good idea not to go swimming in harbors today," tweeted NWS Los Angeles.

A recent report from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America revealed that San Diego is more susceptible to tsunamis than experts previously believed.
