This Saturday, December 4, is National Cookie Day, just in time for the holidays.

According to National Day Calendar, the English word "cookie" comes from the Dutch word koekie, meaning "little cake."

While the origin of the cookie is traced back to Persia in the 7th century, cookies didn't arrive in America until the 17th century. Gingerbread cookies and macaroons were among the first popular American cookies.

If you don't have time to bake this weekend, you can celebrate National Cookie Day by checking out some of the best bakeries in the San Diego area.
