Here's What Caused Waves At Torrey Pines State Beach To Turn Hot Pink PHOTO

Scripps Institution of Oceanography is claiming responsibility for why waves on Torrey Pines State Beach turned the color pink this past week.

Researchers were conducting a study called 'Plumes in Nearshore Conditions,' or PiNC.

The purpose is to show how salt water interacts with fresh water near the shore.

Scripps researchers said they released non-toxic dye in the nearby Los Peñasquitos Lagoon coastal estuary, so they can monitor what happens when 'small-scale plumes' end up where the waves break.

The information they gather from the study will be crucial to understanding how sediments, pollutants and other materials disperse to the shorelines.

Scripps said the dye poses no threat to humans, wildlife, or the environment.
