A fast moving brushfire broke out off Interstate 8 in the college area shortly before 2pm Thursday prompting multiple evacuations as multiple agencies battled the flames moving up a hillside. Currently the acreage burned is approximately 37.
The fire started in the area of Montezuma and Fairmont avenue. Crews have been battling it from the ground and from above as helicopters made numerous drops.

Mandatory evacuations are underway in the following areas:
- South of Alvarado Canyon Road
- West of Hewlett Drive
- North of Monroe Avenue
- East of Montezuma Road
The Allied Gardens Recreation Center at 5155 Greenbrier Ave. is acting as a temporary shelter for people under the evacuation order.
