The final day to collect signatures has passed as backers of the recall against Gavin Newsom submitted the last of their petitions yesterday, now Democrats from across the country will attempt to unite to try to keep him in office.
National Democrats praised Governor Gavin Newsom as one of the nation's most formidable leaders in the fight against COVID-19, but Californians know the real story. Newsom has failed on almost every metric when it comes to handling the pandemic and they have made it clear they want him out.
The deadline to submit signatures to trigger a Recall election has passed. In order for an election to take place, nearly 1.5 million people would have to have signed petitions.
“The tally is still being calculated, but we estimate about 2.1 million signatures being submitted before the deadline,” Carl DeMaio stated.
Now every County will have the responsibility in the next 30 days to certify how many signatures have been submitted. “If the validity rate that we’ve been seeing internally within the campaign holds up, we think we will end up with about 1.8 million valid signatures. Far above the 1.496 million required to trigger a recall,” said DeMaio
So, what happens next?
After the tally is announced in late April, Governor Gavin Newsom will be given 30 days to try and rescind signatures. It is still unclear if Newsom will try to do that, but DeMaio thinks he might. “The guy has more money than you can shake a stick at, so he could certainly hire staff to set up tables to try to con people into signing recision notices that would take their name off of the petition,” DeMaio said.
Newsom is going to have a tough battle trying to get people to reverse their stance on the recall. “You would have to convince people to sign a petition saying they made a mistake and want their name removed,” DeMaio stated. “But there are ways that Democrats can trick people into signing,” he continued.
