Just days before a signature drive was slated to wrap up to force a Recall Election against her, controversial Carlsbad City Councilmember Cori Schumacher announced her resignation from office.
The Recall against Schumacher was filed days after a San Diego Judge found Schumacher liable for falsely accusing several of her constituents as posing a violent threat to her personal safety and seeking a restraining order against them. Schumacher’s only evidence was the constituents had criticized her on social media. In dismissing her restraining order application, the judge not only reprimanded Schumacher but fined her financially and found in favor of a counter-suit filed by the constituents. City taxpayers faced the possibility of being forced to pay more than $100,000 in damages to the victims of Schumacher’s misconduct.
“Schumacher had been a far left-wing city councilmember in Carlsbad that was backing all sorts of policies that were way out of the norm,” said DeMaio. “She supported things like higher taxes, raids on our road repair funds (transferring money to mass transit projects), the mileage tax, and the Green New Deal, but she took things to a whole new level of misconduct when she decided she would accuse her critics of being violent and a danger to society by filling out a false police reports and filing unjust restraining orders,” DeMaio continued.
Schumacher said in her newsletter that the reason she is leaving is because she decided to take on something different that would not allow her to continue in her current position.
“I have chosen to attend a university outside the county of San Diego,” Schumacher stated. “It’s an opportunity I simply cannot refuse. Unfortunately, this means that I am no longer able to continue my role as council member.”
Schumacher has not responded to questions about the recall or about her continuing conflicts with local residents and elected officials.
“This is a big win for the citizens of Carlsbad and removes a toxic presence from Carlsbad city government,” DeMaio stated. “These far-left-wing politicians think that rules don’t apply to them, that there is some special privilege they should have because they are elected officials,” he continued.
