With Covid now in a manageable endemic phase, there is neither a scientific nor a legal basis for California to remain in a State of Emergency - but Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democrats in the state legislature still refuse to lift the order
Even as California hosts the Super Bowl, California Governor Gavin Newsom says our state is still under a State of Emergency. Why? Because the Covid pandemic could kill millions of people in California alone within a matter of six to eight weeks!
When Newsom originally imposed the State of Emergency nearly two years ago, that was the justification used - millions of pending deaths in California alone - and that same hysterical and erroneous justification is still being used today.
The mountains of Covid science we have racked up overwhelmingly refutes the need for a State of Emergency to continue in California. Death rates are far lower than originally projected and are concentrated in narrow demographics of older individuals (75+) and to a lesser extent individuals with pre-existing conditions. Even during the recent Omicron surge, California hospital capacity remained resilient - with Covid patients never exceeding 10% of available hospital beds.
In addition, look around the country. All but a handful of US states are operating without emergency orders and have been since June of 2021. Those states are doing as good or better than California on Covid metrics but without the associated cost and divisiveness of the California mandates.
So why does Newsom continue his unscientific and data-refuted emergency order? Newsom wants continued emergency powers to bypass the legislature and impose far-ranging restrictions and mandates.
But don’t expect Newsom to follow his own mandates. Newsom was caught earlier this month breaking his own masking rules once again - a pattern of mandate-breaking by Democrat elected officials across the state.
“California Democrats have used fear, not science and data, in devising their Covid response,” says Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.
“The emergency order and its associated lockdowns and mandates have not produced any public health benefits when compared to other states, but they have resulted in massive costs in terms of lost jobs and lost learning by children,” DeMaio says.
Kevin Kiley, Assemblyman for California’s 6th district and now a Candidate for California’s 3rd congressional district, agrees with DeMaio and this week introduced a legislative resolution (ACR 46) to effectively end the Governor’s state of emergency.
“End the emergency, end all restrictions. Let’s let the people of California move on with their lives,” said Kiley at a press conference with other legislators this week.
Unfortunately and predictably, the Democrat super-majority in the State Assembly refused to bring the resolution to a vote and defeated the effort along party lines. A similar attempt in the Senate was also unsuccessful.
“We’re about to host the Super Bowl — the actual Super Bowl — in a few days during a State of Emergency, and so that’s why I focused on terminating the emergency as the remedy that will get us back to normal faster than anything else,” said Kiley. “The Democrats … voted to continue the State of Emergency — Super Bowl or not,” he explained.
Kiley explained that the courts have generally refused to end the State of Emergency or Covid restrictions as well - punting the issue to the elected representatives in the state legislature. Kiley has been one of the few consistent voices fighting the emergency orders and mandates since the pandemic began. Kiley is now running for US Congress.
DeMaio is urging fed up Californians to join him and Kiley in the fight to hold Newsom accountable — by making their misguided and costly failed Covid response a key issue in the 2022 election.
“In addition to Newsom being on the 2022 ballot, so are all the State Assemblymembers who let him continue his emergency orders that did so much harm to Californians,” DeMaio reminds us.
“That’s why we need to make this an issue in the 2022 election and throw some of these negligent politicians out of office,” DeMaio concluded.
DeMaio recently announced he is targeting 24 “toss up” seats across the state where he and Reform California are targeting negligent politicians for removal from office - and is asking concerned Californians to join this fight.
