President Joe Biden and the Democrats are revoking policies that deter illegal immgration on May 23rd, signaling that a illegal border crossings will spike in California in the coming weeks. Opponents argue the policy change will lead to “tragic” drug and human trafficking as well as increased costs to taxpayers.
California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom (D), may still say there’s a Covid state of emergency, but Democrat U.S. President Joe Biden disagrees - and is looking to strip the US Border Patrol of a key authority it has been using to turn illegal immigrants away from our southern border.
Last week Biden announced that Title 42 protections at the southern border would be rolled back. Title 42 is a clause of the US Code implemented in 1944 that allows for the “apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals” with the goal of “preventing the introduction, transmission, or spread of such communicable diseases.”
The Trump Administration invoked Title 42 in 2020 to fight border crossings during the Covid surge and turned away more than 1.7 million illegal immigrants. The individuals were expelled into Mexico or back to their home countries, according to Customs and Border Protection.
Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California, says the move will cause illegal immigration activity to skyrocket - and California will bear the cost of this misguided policy change.
“We will absolutely see increased illegal caravans and tragic drug and human trafficking if Title 42 is removed,” said DeMaio. “It’s a dangerous and short-sighted move that will hurt the immigrants themselves, Americans, and our infrastructure,” he continued.
In the last 6 months, there have been record numbers of illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border — nearly a million. “But that was with Title 42 still in place,” reminds DeMaio.
“If we broadcast that our border patrol will be unable to turn individuals away now that Title 42 is not in play, that will absolutely incentivize increased border crossings,” DeMaio explained. “Coyotes can now say ‘it’s back to the old system of just showing up and forcing your way in,’” he said.
DeMaio warns that California will likely see more of the brunt of the surge in illegal immigrants this time around - particularly in light of decisions by Texas’ governor to deploy law enforcement to that state’s southern border.
In stark contrast, Governor Newsom and the California Democrats have declared California a sanctuary state, meaning that the government will actively shield illegal immigrants from deportation.
“In California, we just roll out the red carpet for illegal immigrants with our lavish benefits and sanctuary status — something other states are smart enough not to do,” he continued.
But what can be done to deter illegal immigration in California?
First, DeMaio is hopeful that lawsuits filed by Republican-controlled states may reverse Biden’s decision on Title 42.
Second, DeMaio says voters need to send a message to California’s politicians who are backing open borders policies by making this issue key in the 2022 elections.
That’s why DeMaio and Reform California are urging all Californians to join the campaign today to target vulnerable open-border Democrats in 2022.
