Gas Tax Revolt Planned for July 1 in California - Sign Up to Participate

Millions of Californians are suffering as gas prices continue to sit at over $6 per gallon — with some areas of the state even paying as much as $7 or $8! But instead of offering relief for struggling families, California Democrats in the State Legislature are actually going to raise the state gas tax on Friday, July 1st!

Reform California, the organization that led the charge to get the “Gas Tax Repeal” Proposition 6 on the ballot in 2018, says that not only is the latest gas tax increase unacceptable, but they are fighting to suspend the current state gas tax and prevent costly gas tax increases from taking effect in the future.

“California has the highest gas tax in the country already, and in the midst of a national gas crisis, it is outrageous that California Democrats are raising the taxes again,” says Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.

DeMaio and Reform California are asking for volunteers to help organize rallies at gas stations across the state on July 1 — and to collect signatures at those rallies on a ballot measure to block future tax hikes called the “California Taxpayer Protection Act.”

“California’s working families are being crushed by high gas prices already and they simply cannot afford to pay more in the form of a higher gas tax — so we’re taking action holding these rallies on July 1 at gas stations across the state not only to send a message to out-of-touch Sacramento politicians but to take action to block new tax hikes in the future,” DeMaio says.

“If the California Taxpayer Protection Act were already law when Sacramento Democrats voted to approve this latest gas tax hike, it would have blocked the tax hike from taking effect,” DeMaio notes.

The California Taxpayer Protection Act would close loopholes politicians have exploited in recent years to impose tax hikes and would strengthen the requirement that local tax hikes must receive two-thirds voter approval to go into effect. In addition, the measure would combat false and misleading ballot titles currently used by state and local politicians to deceive voters into voting for ballot items that contain hidden tax hikes.

DeMaio says the campaign has already collected over 1 million signatures — but still needs roughly 300,000 more signatures to ensure the measure qualifies for a statewide vote. The effort faces a deadline of July 15 to collect the signatures they need.

DeMaio is asking for volunteers to attend one of the signature drives on July 1st or request the petition and commit to collecting just 30 signatures in their local area. You would then mail the signatures back to DeMaio’s Reform California campaign headquarters by July 15 for processing.

“Our gas tax revolt on July 1 is a two-for because we not only send a message that we’ve had enough of high gas prices under Sacramento Democrats, but we will also collect thousands of signatures we desperately need to make big change happen to block future tax hikes,” DeMaio concludes.
