What the Peanut Ban on Southwest Airlines Could Mean

No more peanuts on Southwest Airlines flights starting August 1st.  The announcement by one of the major airlines at San Diego International Airport brought more reaction than you might think.

One reason is because through the years, Southwest Airlines has used peanuts as one of the ways they conveyed their message that they were a no frills, low fare airline and it has worked to help deliver that message to customers and potential customers.

Some longtime passengers said don’t take away the peanuts.  Others though said they should have done it a long time ago.

The reason they are finally banning peanuts on board, as other airlines like United and American have done for some time, is because of peanut allergies.  A lot of kids and adults have them and just getting too close to a peanut can cause very severe allergic health reactions and can even be fatal.  So it makes sense.

But some passengers are now asking about those other things still on board many airline flights that also can cause health problems for people who are allergic to them.

They would be all the dogs and cats and even other animals that passengers are allowed to bring on board with them.

There are a lot of people who are allergic to dogs or are allergic to cats.  For them, being in close proximity to the animals or having their dander and hair in the air in the passenger cabin can cause allergic reactions.

A statement from Southwest Airlines said:

“Our ultimate goal is to create an environment where all customers — including those with peanut-related allergies — feel safe and welcome on every Southwest flight.”

Well if that’s true, then wouldn’t it make sense to also ban dogs and cats from the passenger cabin?
