It's Almost Pie Time...For A Good Cause!

The 14th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale will run from Oct. 8 through Nov. 19 and include two dozen local bakers. The annual bake sale benefits Mama's Kitchen, an organization working to eliminate hunger issues among those in San Diego living with serious illnesses.

AIDS Assistance Fund volunteers founded the organization in 1990 to deliver food to AIDS and HIV patients. Bake sale organizers aim to beat 2017's fundraising total of more than $135,000 by raising at least $140,000 for Mama's Kitchen. Pie sale proceeds go toward free meals for residents living with HIV, cancer and other illnesses; the $140,000 fundraising goal would fund nearly 48,000 meals.

"As we reach the end of the year and look back at all that's been accomplished, I'm proud to see and present a new and improved Mama's Kitchen,'' said Alberto Cortes, executive director of Mama's Kitchen.

``Not only do we have new programs and have rebranded our annual bake sale event with a new name and website, but also have a new executive chef after two decades, Jason Martin, at the helm. We're excited to once again collaborate with our community on Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale to help our neighbors in need.''

Available pie flavors include pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple. You can purchase pies and donating directly to Mama's Kitchen via the Mama's Pies website or by calling (619) 233-6262. Pies will be available for pickup Nov. 21 across San Diego County.
