Video taken Tuesday near the San Ysidro Port of Entry shows people climbing on top of the border fence near Friendship Park as a caravan of several thousand Central American migrants continues its trek northward from southern Mexico.
Reports say the people are among some migrants who broke off from the original caravan and have begun to arrive in Tijuana.
Their arrival comes as the Trump administration has been beefing up security along the Mexican border from San Diego to Texas with some troops from Camp Pendleton putting up increased barriers with barbed wire in some areas. On Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the closure of several northbound border lanes in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa as part of the preparation for the migrant caravan.
A Border Patrol spokesperson told reporting partner 10News that agents were keeping watch on the U.S. side of the park, but were not aware of anyone climbing all the way over onto the U.S. side of the beach.
A Customs and Border Protection official says the increased security measures are designed to make sure that anyone seeking asylum in the U.S. presents themselves at the port of entry and does not illegally cross over into the U.S.
